This
is about a man who forfeited his chance to study in bargain for his father’s
deteriorating health. When I learnt that he had relinquished the opportunity to
upgrade his qualification I was totally shocked. I thought he was crazy.
Who would ever let go such opportunity? After all he won the chance to do
so through a competitive selection process.
And
when I came to know the reason behind his decision my respect for my
friend Dechen Choezin increased manifold. “Studies opportunities will come in
future, but I only have a father and if I don’t take care of him when he is
sick, I would regret rest of my days,” he tells me. “And for the sake of my
father I am willing to give up my plan.”
I am
really moved. How many sons and daughters make such sacrifices? We were told
many Bhutanese don't mind leaving behind their dying parents at home as
they proceed to upgrade their qualifications and make big money. A little
diversion here, but I have also heard of a mother leaving her child behind after
three days of delivery to go to Australia with her husband. I can’t imagine
doing that even as a father. But bravo, such people roam the length and breadth
of our country!
Right - there will be countless opportunities to upgrade one’s qualification, but we
only have one set of parents. And when they are still with us, alive
and healthy or sick on their dying beds, it is our responsibility to take care
of them – making them feel cared. That’s important – and this value will take
us far in life, I am sure.
Coming
to my friend, I am sure he did the right thing. And I salute his decision.
Today I want to tell him how much respect I have gained for him and I should
let him know about this. For now I only hope and pray that his father attains a
quick recovery.
Choezin
- please accept my high regard and deepest respect. Take care of your father and make him feel special – the miracle will do the rest. After six
years of great friendship, today I applaud you with a standing ovation for
showing me and many others out there the right way!

ReplyDeleteVery inspiring! I have come across many people who left for other opportunities leaving behind their beloved ones sick and unattended. It's something we must do, make sacrifices to the ones who have given so much in our life. Indeed, we feel not only proud but genuinely happy for your friend.
