Bhutanese Bloggers e-Conference

First up – it is so good to hear from our own bloggers and I am happy to learn that the Bhutanese blogging community is mushrooming by the day. This is good for the nation.

And secondly I would also like to thank Rekha Monger for initiating this bloggers’ conference. It was timely and fun, and I am sure this initiative will for sure lead us somewhere in future; except that I wish we keep doing this quite often.

Thank you Rekha!

1. Why did you start blogging in the first place? And what’s the story behind your blog title?
Back in my Shercol days, I used to fiddle with a lot of sites that allowed us to write and post pictures. The idea was tempting. Back then I tried writing on www.helium.com - it was of course my friend PaSsu, who directed me to this site. And later I caught hold of our own sites www.nopkin.com and www.kuzuzangpo.com. But the best thing came about when I started my own blog on a platform that www.blogpost.com provided. However, back then it was a site where I would post pictures of my classmates with funny captions. I didn’t really understand that blogging could take me thus far. It was only in 2009 that I took blogging seriously. The current blog – I titled it thus – although I didn’t write well, writing was what I thought would keep doing. By the way I still struggle writing a paragraph. I was fascinated by the phrase “Pen is mightier than the sword” that I titled my blog – Penstar with “for the pen is mightier than the sword” as subtitle and in doing so I wanted to celebrate writing.

2. How long have you been blogging? Where are you based?
As stated earlier, I started fiddling with different writing sites and blogs way back in 2006. But the current blog was born much later – in early 2009. Back in 2009 I was based in Phuentsholing and what I wrote was mainly about the issues that town was facing. I also ended up touching on subjects that the nation was debating on, etc.

3. How do you schedule your blog post? Daily or weekly? Or as and when inspiration strikes you?
Back in 2009 I had time at my disposal to write on many things. And inspiration was something I had although I may have blogged on many small and pity issues. But today I don’t get to blog very often due to time constraint. Of course I realized it is nothing to do with time, but commitment. So, I have no schedules (how I wish I can have one though) for blogging for now. I blog only when I am fully tempted by a subject and that I feel I have some sufficient points to support my statement.

4. Does your family and friends know about your blog?
Like PaSsu – my first audience whenever I write something is my wife. She likes me to read everything I write on my blog and then she would think and comment. I am always thankful to her. And of course my former classmates and friends are my first readers. It is only because of them that I have been able to continue to do something that I loved doing.

Thank you!

P.S: I tag the following bloggers:

5. Kuenza

Utpal Academy - Bhutan's first All-girls High School

Academic Block Welcome to Bhutan’s first all-girls school. Isn’t that wonderful news to all our parents? Certainly, as a parent of a one-year old daughter I am excited about the coming of a school exclusively dedicated to the needs of girls. Our girls need special treatment, which we can for sure entrust the responsibility to Utal Academy, Paro. Dinning Hall I really like the name – Utpal – in Buddhist world, Utpal is another name for lotus flower, which is believed to grow from mud and yet blossoms into a beautiful and majestic flower. It stands for purity and many deities are depicted holding flower Utpal, more prominently Jestusn Dolma, the Goddess Tara. Symbolically, it also stands for the transformation of our girls. What an apt name for the school! Hostel Room The Principal’s message posted on the academy’s website promises providing our young women an “opportunity to participate fully in a wide range of extracurricular activities to develop skills and qualities that

Community of Bhutanese Bloggers Conceived

And finally it happened. I must say that it was by far the most attended Bloggers Meet. In the past we had bloggers agree to attend and cancel at the very last minute. But on June 24, 2015 – almost 100% of bloggers, who confirmed came. I would like to thank everyone for keeping his/her words, especially those who had to come all the way from Wangdue or Paro. Thank you! 35 Bhutanese bloggers met in Thimphu. We were honored to have the presence of senior bloggers like Aue Yeshi Dorji and Dasho Sangay Khandu. The meeting assumed more significance because of their presence. Equally, we were happy to have many young bloggers in whom we see so much enthusiasm and potential. On top of many things that transpired during the Meet, one of the most significant outcomes was the unanimous decision reached to form a formal group of bloggers, a platform aimed at encouraging and inspiring more bloggers around the country. The members decided that we will call it Community of Bhutanese Blogger

When FIVE is more than FIVE HUNDRED

Bhutanese parents complain that our children are exposed to so much foreign content and that they might soon forget our own root. Some parents also feel that their children respond well and better to stories that have Bhutanese characters and places in them. That's why the need for more and better Bhutanese books in the market. And we have only a handful of people who are committed to making this happen although the financial return is almost none.   Bhutan can boast of not many writers. Here writing or publishing aspect of writing is an expensive hobby. In the first place, it is difficult to convince people to publish their writings and many leave it before they are halfway. Publishing is a complicated process. But here it is even more complicated since our publishers are not publishers in the real sense of the term. They would only 'publish' (print) school textbooks and in that they are only being wise - averting risks to their businesses.  Recently, the whole
